ON A WING
ON A WING
$145 one-day class
On A Wing was born soon
after buying a wing component from a friend of mine. When I spotted it, I just knew it would work well layered on
a cuff.
We will begin by etching
a brass cuff. Next, after using a favorite cold join
method of attachment, we will begin adding some movement. By simply adding a line of dangles, you
will do just that. What kind of
dangles you might ask? How about
tiny resin charms, little nests I call “nesties”, perhaps a pewter bird or
monopoly pieces. Adding baroque
pearls, tiny faceted gemstones, or bits of vintage rhinestones, are also great
options. There are really lots of
possibilities.
Lastly, we will make time to
play with one of my favorite patina options, Gilders Paste. So many
possibilities await you in this class.
Won’t you join me?

ETCHING & MICRO-TORCH SOLDERING
$145 one-day class
Finally, two classes to introduce you to some fundamentals! I have designed two technique-based days for you to learn a ton of basics in etching, micro torch soldering, and cold connections. You may take both days, and work towards designing a specific project, or take the workshops purely as an introduction to these skills. Or maybe you tried these things once and need a refresher? These classes will give you the confidence to take more challenging workshops.
This workshop day will be devoted to teaching you some basic metalsmith skills. The morning will be dedicated to learning the art of etching base metals. You will learn the multi-step process of how to prepare metal for etching, apply the resist, what chemicals to use, then how to finish them. Experiment with an assortment of base metals using nickel, brass and copper, to see how each metal reacts to this magical chemical process. Learn how to age them, applying patinas, and the effect it has on each metal. The results are rich and detailed raised patterns, begging to be made into jewelry or mixed media projects. Etching is one of my favorite processes, and you will love it. This is something you can easily learn in the classroom and then take that knowledge home.
The afternoon is devoted to a combination of cutting and filing metal, followed by the basics of butane micro-torch soldering. In many workshops it is an advantage to have experience in preparing metals as well as torch soldering, and this half-day is designed to give you that experience. I’ll show you tools to make cutting metal shapes easy. Then learn the correct technique of filing, giving your pieces a professional look. Soldering begins with me demonstrating a variety of methods: sweat soldering, floating solder, attaching bezels, brass stampings and connecting rhinestone chain. After my instruction, the afternoon is yours to practice! There is no pressure to finish anything and no rush. My goal in the afternoon is helping you find your comfort zone at torch soldering, from filling it to killing it! Think about taking my Birds & Bling workshop, using your beautiful etched pieces, and your new expertise in soldering.
I am so excited about spending this day with you, introducing you to etching, working with sheet metals, and torch soldering. This day will hopefully be a beginner’s dream, and an intermediate’s chance to hone those skills.

BY THE SEA
$145 one-day class
This necklace was
designed upon returning home from Art Retreat by the Beach in 2012. The
gemstones I used are reminiscent of the sparking blue waters of the Pacific
Ocean that spoke to me so crystal clear…so won’t you come join me, as I share a
special technique for adding stamped texture to a beautiful brass collar? By using silver bearing solder and your
favorite rubber stamps, or as I call it, “gilding with solder”, you too will
have a beautiful piece of jewelry to remind you of your time “By The Sea”.
This day will be filled with techniques for adding texture to your piece, not only with solder, but with metal stamps, hammers and punches, and by using your torch! I
will also share some of my favorite patina options, such as using Gilders
Paste.
I believe you’ll be
thrilled with where the techniques you learn in this class will take you. You will only be limited by your
imagination….let’s see how far you can take it!

COLD CONNECTIONS
$145 one-day class
This is the second fun day of learning
fundamentals needed to grow your craft in jewelry and mixed media. I designed this workshop for those
wanting to learn new metal smith skills, and a refresher course for those who
have slightly dipped in to cold connections, but need practice. We will cover the basics of how to use
a Dremel for drilling. These
drills can be intimidating. So how
do you work those gadgets safely, not drill through anything you don’t want to,
and keep your pieces from sliding around? We will cover this. How do you drill for rivets and tube
settings? When to use rivets and eyelets? How do you set them? How do you drill
a porcelain doll head? How about
making a rivet that allows movement?
Discover the wonderful world of micro hardware, those little mini screws
and bolts. Micro hardware can be
used in endless ways for connections.
Learn to make a tab setting.
This workshop is jam packed with cold connection and drilling
demonstrations, interspersed with you being set free to practice these
techniques. This class is perfect to begin, or continue, your exploration with connections
and the necessary tools in a comfortable and safe atmosphere. No pressure, just relaxed learning. If you took my Fundamentals 101 workshop, you will have etched metal you could play with in this class. Use skills learned from both Fundamental workshops, applying them to my Birds & Bling workshop on day three. You will use many of the soldering and cold connection techniques, but they will be easier and faster for you. I hope to see you in one or more of these workshops, opening yourself up to learning new jewelry making skills. I’m thrilled to be able to offer technique classes, allowing you to increase your knowledge, for future creations. These workshops allow for connections to be made in, and outside the workshops!

Come join me as I share
the techniques used to design the pieces I call “Framed”, which were published
in the winter 2011 issue of Belle Armoire Jewelry. .
In this class you will learn how to cold join layers of nickel silver, copper or brass; topping it with a pre-drilled vintage mother of pearl buckle. I will demo ways to texture your metal, which will add wonderful depth to your pendant. And, I will teach you how to torch fire enamel base metal. You'll have the option to fill your frame with a favorite picture and/or words, then seal it forever behind mica. Time permitting, final design options for the necklace portion, will be discussed.

In this workshop you will have various beach themed photos

BIRDS AND BLING
$145 one-day class
Learn to float solder with a micro butane torch, solder on
rhinestone chain, work with small sheet metal pieces, drill, add a few cold
connections, patina and then how to design and wire your necklace
together. This is one of my
favorite necklaces to make! This
beautiful project incorporates a few fabulous components to work with,
rhinestones and birds. Build this
pendant from scratch, forming the base shape of your choice from sheet
metal. After perfecting the shape,
the fun continues with using a micro butane torch to float solder, then
attaching a bezel. If you have
taken my Fundamentals 101 class, you will have etched metal to design with if
you like, and will have more experience in soldering. And if you have taken my Fundamentals 102 class, you will
get more practice using cold connections you learned. In Birds & Bling, we will drill then attach the sweet
twig with wire, creating an awesome vine.
You can have so much fun creating this pendant. Feel free to change it up, play with a
variety of components, and make it your own. Use any of the templates I provide, or design your own
shape. It’s helpful if you have
soldered before, still this is a good project for a beginner. After your spectacular pendant is
built, design around it and wire a variety of new and vintage objects together,
creating an amazing necklace. If
you have no wiring experience, I’ll show you some basics for connections. The little focal frame on the pendant
has an opening of about ½” by ½”, so you can bring your own photo or words to
insert inside, and I’ll bring some as well. The pendant measures about 2” by 1 ½”. Bring some crystals, vintage buttons,
antique items, pearls or bling, whatever makes your heart sing!
